Chalazion

Chalazion

What is a Chalazion?

A chalazion, or stye, is a blocked oil gland in the upper or lower eyelid that causes swelling, inflammation, and a bump that can be painful. Often they resolved on their own with warm compresses, but some need to be treated.

How is a Chalazion treated?

Warm compresses, medications, injections, and surgical procedures to drain or excise are all treatments for a chalazion. Often when patients have tried warm compresses and medical therapy and the chalazion does not resolve, they come to us for excision.

Am I a Candidate to Treat my Chalazion?

The first step is to have a consultation with an oculoplastic specialist. Dr. Pfeiffer will determine the best course of treatment for your chalazion. Should your chalazion need to be surgically treated, your insurance will cover the procedure. Pre-authorization may be required.

When Can I Return to Normal Activity?

If your chalazion needs surgical intervention, you may leave with a patch and be given medication to use for 1-2 weeks. Bruising and swelling are expected for about 1 week. Most people are able to return to their normal activities immediately following the procedure.
