What Is Laser Skin Resurfacing?

What Problems Can Laser Skin Resurfacing Improve?

Laser skin resurfacing is available for many conditions. It can significantly improve the appearance and texture of the skin to give a more youthful look.

Laser resurfacing is most often performed to:

• Decrease or eliminate wrinkles
• Lessen the appearance of scars
• Tighten skin
• Repair sun-damaged skin
• Remove facial age spots or spider veins
• Improve skin tone and the effects of melasma or skin discoloration
• Decrease the size of enlarged pores

Types of Laser Skin Resurfacing

The two basic types of laser resurfacing treatments that Dr. Pfeiffer offers are CO2 and non-ablative:

• CO2 Laser Resurfacing: CO2 laser resurfacing is an ablative treatment that penetrates more deeply to induce collagen production while exfoliating superficial skin layers. Ablative resurfacing provides more dramatic results because it instantly removes several layers of the skin. However, that means it will require a longer period of healing and recuperation.
• Non-Ablative Laser Skin Resurfacing

Non-ablative treatments, also known as photofacials, do not ablate skin. Rather, these treatments use the laser’s light energy to stimulate collagen growth and tighten underlying skin. Non-ablative resurfacing is gentler than the CO2 and requires no downtime, however, most patients require more treatment sessions and results may not be as dramatic. Patients may use makeup to cover any redness immediately after treatment and return to your normal activities.

Recovery from Laser Skin Resurfacing

Recovery time from laser resurfacing procedures will vary by procedure and the individual patient’s skin type. After laser resurfacing, every patient should always use SPF 45 or higher sunscreen .

Although laser skin treatment is considered safe, some of the risks of laser skin resurfacing may include:

• Redness
• Burning
• Pigmentation changes
• Milia (tiny white bumps on the skin)
• Scarring
