4 Family-Friendly Dallas-Area May Events

DallasSMALLAs summer draws near, the Dallas-area calendar is quickly filling up. Whether
you need a night out with your special someone or are looking for some
fun for the whole family, here are a few upcoming events you might enjoy.

Deep Ellum Urban Race and Block Party — May 3

It’s the first ever
Deep Ellum Urban Race and Block Party, a fresh take on the traditional scavenger hunt where teams will conquer
the diverse Deep Ellum neighborhood, Amazing Race-style. Challenges range
from pop culture trivia to local history, and teams will decode clues,
solve puzzles and follow the breadcrumbs that will lead them around Deep
Ellum and straight to the finish line. After the race, Life in Deep Ellum
is hosting a block party open to the whole community featuring live music,
food trucks, DJs, games, raffles and more.

Dallas Cinco de Mayo 2014 Big Parade & Festival — May 3

Celebrate Cinco de Mayo in a big way at the annual
Cinco de Mayo Parade & Festival in Oak Cliff. The festival is open from 10am to 4pm, complete with live
shows on the main stage, vendors, food, a car show, DJs on every block
and a parade on Jefferson Blvd starting at 11am.

Kentucky Derby Day at Lone Star Park — May 3

Put on your favorite Kentucky Derby Hat and head to Lone Star Park to watch
the 140th running of the Kentucky Derby. The annual Kentucky Derby Hat
Contest will take place on the Courtyard of Champions, where contestants
have a chance to win one of two $500 grand prizes for “The Most
Stylish” and “The Most Creative” hats. Moving Colors
will perform live on the Courtyard of Champions stage from 4-8pm, and
kids will enjoy bounce houses, pony rides and a petting zoo in the Family Fun Park.

Sherlock Holmes: The Final Adventure — Through May 25

It’s the regional premier of “Sherlock Holmes: The Final Adventure” at the
Dallas Theater Center. This witty play filled with intrigue, humor and surprise brings to life
the ageless appeal of the world’s greatest detective. With his stalwart
sidekick Doctor Watson by his side, Holmes pursues a blackmail case that
leads him straight into the lair of his arch-adversary, Professor Moriarty.
Follow the clues and join the fun with the clever duo on their mysterious
adventure, told in true Holmes-Watson fashion.

Charlotte’s Web — Through June 1

The Dallas Children’s Theater presents the best-loved children’s story of all time, “Charlotte’s
Web.” Children ages five and up (and those who are young at heart)
will get caught in Charlotte’s web to save the “radiant”
and “humble pig” Wilbur and make friends with all his loveable
barnyard neighbors.

If you are headed outside, don’t forget to wear your sunglasses and
a wide-brimmed hat to
protect your eyes from the sun. Even on a cloudy day, the sun’s UVA and UVB rays can
damage your eyes, so be sure you wear sunglasses designed to block 100%
of UVA and UVB rays.
