For Chewbacca Mom, Life’s Simple Joys Are Even More Joyful After LASIK

image of candice payneTo date, more than 8 million viewers have laughed along with 37-year-old, stay-at-home mom Candace Payne as she dons a Chewbacca mask in her internet-busting viral video on YouTube. Life has been full of excitement and revelations for Payne since sharing the video in May.While she was making the rounds of the morning talk shows, appearing on James Corden’s Late Late Show and scoring a Chewbacca action figure made in her likeness, Payne was also lamenting her disdain for wearing glasses and contacts. That’s when Payne reached out to Key-Whitman Eye Center to see if she was a candidate for LASIK. Fortunately, Key-Whitman Eye Center’s
President and Chief Surgeon Jeffrey Whitman, M.D., was able to clear her for the procedure with flying colors.

Chewbacca Mom Candace Payne explains why Dr. Whitman was her first choice for a LASIK eye surgeon in Dallas.

Glasses and contacts regularly interfered with Payne’s daily activities

There is a pivotal point in Payne’s viral video where she giggles about having to remove her glasses so she can put the Chewbacca mask on. According to Payne, before LASIK, there were many moments like the one in the video where she had to pause life to remove her glasses.

As she explains, “When it’s about being able to play and enjoy every single moment of the day – uninhibited – my glasses got in the way. Even simple tasks like cooking a meal for my kids. You open the oven at the wrong time and steam comes out and you realize, ‘I don’t know if dinner is ready, give me three minutes for my glasses to clear up.’”

Maintaining clear vision was an ongoing challenge

As a worship leader at her church, Payne had difficulty reading the confidence monitors during services either from glare on her glasses or protein build up on her contact lenses. A smoke machine near the stage didn’t help matters.

“When I wore contacts, they would only feel fresh for about two hours, even daily wear lenses. I was continually using rewetting drops to remove protein deposits from my lenses, probably about five or six times a day. It was hard to maintain clear vision every single day. I could see, but it always felt like I was looking through a fog,” Payne says.

Payne was excited – not nervous – going into LASIK surgery

During her initial LASIK consultation and on surgery day, Payne felt comfortable having eye surgery at Key-Whitman, because the doctor and other staff members clearly explained why she was a good candidate for LASIK surgery, what would happen during the procedure and what she could expect afterwards.

Payne shares insight about the day of her surgery and how she felt after the LASIK procedure.

Life is more enjoyable for Chewbacca Mom after LASIK

Following her LASIK eye surgery, Payne now enjoys 20/20 vision and doesn’t have to worry about removing her glasses before she records a video or opens the oven. And she doesn’t have to take time to grab eye drops before heading to church or her kids’ football and little league games.

As Payne explains, “I was hopeful that I’d be able to get the vision I wanted to have after LASIK and hopeful that it would bring some ease and comfort to my every day life, and it has. I love to crochet, and I sing and play guitar. LASIK has changed everything that I do. It’s made everything much more enjoyable.”

You haven’t heard the last from Candace Payne

Fans of Chewbacca Mom will also be happy to know that she plans to continue her quest to inspire others, especially stay-at-home moms.

“The video showed that I regularly make space in my life to find simple joys like I did with the mask, and that led to extravagant joy. So today when I see a stay-at-home mom, especially one of those young mommas with two babies on her hip, I’m happy to say, ‘Can I help you get your groceries to your car or buy you a coffee?’ – because I’ve been there. Sometimes a coffee and a taco is all you need,” laughs Payne.
