Dr. Martin L. Faber is a Therapeutic Optometrist at Key-Whitman Eye Center. A Michigan native, Dr. Faber earned his undergraduate degree at Michigan State University and his Optometry degree from Ferris State University’s Michigan College of Optometry. He has practiced in the Dallas / Fort Worth area since 1983!
Who/what inspired you to do what you do?
I was very near sighted at a young age and always enjoyed going to my optometrist, Dr Bellows. He always made the visits enjoyable and when I expressed interest in becoming an eye doctor he help guide me through the process.
What is most rewarding about your work?
I have always liked connecting with my patients on a personal level. I try to remember things about them and let them get to know me. This provides a bond that can last a lifetime.
Are there any new technologies not currently available that you look forward to?
It would be great to have a simple, non invasive method of restoring the eye’s ability to focus beyond the age of forty. There are technologies that currently help but none that can completely bring our accommodation back.
Is there a time when you thought to yourself: “This is why I do what I do”?
About thirty years ago I saw a patient for a routine eye examination. During this exam testing showed that he had a brain tumor. When I went to visit him in the hospital after his surgery the emotional gratitude shown by his family members helped my realize what I meaningful profession I had chosen.
What are some hobbies you enjoy outside of work?
My father taught me to bowl at a young age. I continue to compete in bowling leagues and tournaments. I also enjoy woodworking and love to create Frank Lloyd Wright style furniture reproductions.
What are some things people may not know about you?
My job through undergraduate college and Optometry school was that of a truck driver. I drove a semi truck for a food distribution company delivering food to schools, hospitals, and restaurants. It taught me the value of the hard work needed to succeed in life.
I graduated from Cadillac High School in 1976. The fall of 1975 brought the rock band KISS to my town to participate in my homecoming parade and perform a concert in our school gym. Unfortunately there are pictures of me floating around with very long hair and KISS face makeup to match Gene Simmons. I have tried to find them all and destroy them but have so far been unsuccessful.
