Contact Lens Care During Allergy Season

Proper care of your contact lenses during allergy season can help relieve some of the symptoms associated with seasonal allergies. Let your eye doctor know about your allergies and any allergy medication you are taking.

Clean your contact lenses more often during allergy season. Pollen and other allergens can get trapped on your lenses, irritating your eyes or drying your eyes out. Clean your contact lenses with a contact lens cleaning solution more often to help keep allergens out of your eyes. Most people only clean their contact lenses at night, or when they take them out. Carry a bottle of solution with you or keep one in your desk at work, and take a few minutes to clean your lenses during the day. You should notice that your eyes are less irritated during the day.

Use rewetting drops to keep your eyes moist. Many allergy medications will actually dry your eyes out. Dry eyes are more irritable. Keep your eyes moist with rewetting drops. You can also ask your eye doctor about purchasing contact lenses that have more moisture in them than some others. Eye drops can also be used to flush out allergens that may be stuck in your eyes during the day if you are unable to clean your lenses.

Wear your glasses or daily wear contacts. If your eyes are easily irritated during allergy season, wearing your eyeglasses may be a better option. If you prefer not to wear glasses, or can’t wear them, talk to your doctor about prescribing daily wear contact lenses. Changing your contacts daily will help eliminate many of the allergens that can get stuck in your eyes during allergy season.

Consult with your eye doctor. If the above tips don’t help relieve some of the effects seasonal allergies has on your eyes, consult with your doctor to be sure there aren’t any additional problems.
