Contact Lens Care Tips

Contact lenses are used by millions of people every day. The majority of the time, people who wear contacts will never experience any serious problems. It is, however, important to understand proper care as improper care or cleaning of contact lenses could lead to eye infection and eye conditions.

Some irritation and redness can be expected with contact lenses, especially when you first begin to wear them. Common problems associated with contact lens use include:

  • Irritation or redness from a torn or broken lens. If a lens is torn, it may feel like there is something in the eye.
  • Irritation, redness and slight blurring of vision due to a poor-fitting or old lens.
  • Makeup on the lens or the eye can cause burning irritation and significant redness.

To prevent these and other symptoms, take the following steps to ensure your contact lenses receive proper care:

  • Wash your hands with soap and water before handling contact lenses.
  • Remove lenses before going in the swimming pool, hot tub shower.
  • Do not rinse or store lenses in water, even sterile water.
  • Do not use saliva to wet your contact lenses. This is an easy way to transfer bacteria that could cause infection to the eye.
  • Follow the directions on your prescription, and do not wear contact lenses longer than the specified time.
  • Follow care instructions on your contact lens solution bottle.
  • Even with “no-rub” solution, it is best to use the “rub and rinse” method to clean contact lenses.
  • Allow lens cases to dry between uses, and only use fresh solution on your contacts each time you store them.

For the most part, common sense when it comes to caring for your contact lenses and proper hygiene will help prevent infections caused by improper care. If you experience any irritation, redness or blurred vision for an extended period of time, contact your eye care professional.
