Board-Certified Cataracts Doctors Serving the DFW Area

In the United States, approximately 22 million people aged 40 and older suffer from cataracts. Cataracts are the leading national cause of blindness among older adults. At Key-Whitman Eye Center, we provide a broad range of treatments designed to suit the individual needs of the patients we so value. This is why our doctors have been named “Best in Dallas” by D Magazine for 17 years!

What is a cataract?

A cataract stops light from entering the retina. This happens when the lens of the eye is cloudy. Symptoms of cataracts include blurred and / or distorted vision and loss of color clarity and brightness. You may notice that glasses don’t help your vision, and that your depth perception and balance are affected. You may also experience unprecedented sensitivity to light, including when you are driving.

Causes of Cataracts

The most common cause of cataracts is aging but other causes can be:

  • Trauma
  • Medications such as Steroids
  • Systemic Diseases such as Diabetes
  • Prolonged Exposure to Ultraviolet Light
  • Smoking

Symptoms of Cataracts

Symptoms of cataracts, even with the best glasses can include:

  • Blurred or distorted vision
  • Loss of Clarity and Brightness of Colors
  • Loss of Depth Perception
  • Sensitivity to Light – Excessive Glare and Halos Around Lights Especially at Night

How Are Cataracts Treated?

Cataracts are treated by removing the cloudy lens through no-stitch out-patient surgery. Key-Whitman Eye Center offers the latest advances in cataract technology, like femtosecond laser cataract surgery. No matter which option you choose, cataract surgery is a proven procedure that has a long history of being extremely safe and effective.

Your Key-Whitman Eye Center surgeon will gently fragment or emulsify the cataract and replace it with a lens implant. If you choose our advanced technology lenses, you can dramatically decrease your dependence on glasses or contacts. Although we cannot guarantee freedom from glasses, if you choose one of our Custom High Technology lenses, you can maximize freedom from glasses or contacts at all distances for most situations.

What happens if Cataracts go Untreated?

If left untreated, cataracts can rob you of your independence and limit your quality of life. It’s important to get checked for cataracts because it is the leading cause of blindness among adults.
