If you are tired of wearing glasses or contact lenses, but you aren’t
sure that LASIK can provide exactly what you need, there are some LASIK
alternatives that you should consider. These alternatives may be able
to provide you with the vision improvement that you are looking for. The
two most common alternatives to LASIK surgery are PRK and ICL. They both
share similarities with the common LASIK procedures, but also have key
PRK also falls under the umbrella of “laser eye surgery.” The
difference is that instead of creating a corneal flap, the cornea is reshaped
by removing a microscopic layer of tissue to improve vision. It can be
used to treat myopia (nearsightedness), or hyperopia (farsightedness),
both with or without astigmatism. It can also be used to treat vision
over or under corrected after other refractive surgery or cataract surgery.
This option is one that you should consider if you are engaged in activities
that put you at a high risk for eye injuries, such as boxing or martial
arts. In the event of an eye injury after LASIK surgery, there is a risk
of LASIK flap dislocation; that risk is not a factor with PRK.
The other option to consider is ICL, or implantable collamer lens better
known as implantable contact lenses. This is a good option for patients
between the ages of 18-40 that are either too nearsighted for LASIK, or
don’t have enough corneal tissue to treat, or for those who are
at least moderately nearsighted who want to leave their cornea intact
and have the option to have the implant removed in the event that a better
treatment option comes along.
Refractive Lens Implants can be beneficial for patients over 50 that also
want to have reading vision corrected along with distance vision. LASIK
is doing great things for our far distance vision, but it doesn’t
correct near vision that is used for reading.
