Dr.
Whitman developed Safe Touch Cataract Surgery™, a no-stitch, gentle,
precise method which can lead to faster visual recovery by minimizing
inflammation in the eye after surgery.
A cataract is not a growth or film, it is the clouding over the focusing
lens of the eye which is located just behind the pupil. Once the
focusing lens begins to cloud, there is no way to make it clear again, nor
any technique to arrest its progress. It steadily limits a person's
ability to do even simple things - seeing street signs, driving at night,
reading, stepping off curbs or steps safely, or performing other activities
of an independent life-style.
To restore vision that has been lost or impaired by a cataract,
the cloudy lens must be removed. But once removed, it must be replaced
since it is the focusing lens of the eye. In most cases, an artificial
lens that has been removed. New advances in lens design now give
our patients the choice to see near and far without complete dependence
on glasses.
Surgery & Post-Op
Surgery is performed on an outpatient basis in our fully accredited
surgery center. Patients need not expect to stay more than a
couple of hours. Prior to surgery, patients are given a relaxant
to enhance calmness. They do not have to remain under anesthesia
and should neither see nor feel any part of the surgery. Using
microincision surgery, the cataract is removed usually by ultrasound. The new lens is inserted and should last a lifetime.
Post-operative limitations are few. For most cataract surgeries,
our surgeons use Dr. Whitman's Safe Touch Cataract Surgery™ method. With this brief, painless technique, most patients can resume their normal
activities immediately and care for themselves with little or no help
from others. The eye heals more quickly and there is no discomfort
from stitches.
