LASIK Eye Surgery

kw_summer_insideImagine waking up to see the world with crisp, brilliant clarity. Is it possible to watch television, drive or play sports all without glasses or contacts? With vision correction surgery, you should find a new freedom to do the things you enjoy most. This procedure has been described as life-changing by many of our patients.

Because your eyes are as unique as you are, you deserve a laser that can address the special qualities and features of your eyes and can provide you with the most optimal vision. That's just what Wavelight® Refractive Suite® can do for you. The doctors at Key-Whitman Eye Center have chosen Wavelight® EX500 and Wavelight® FS200 because your safety and results are priorities. The Wavelight® laser has the best outcomes reported to the FDA. It is designed to preserve the natural shape of your cornea, thus giving you the best quality of vision.

Your eye works a lot like a camera; bending light to focus it onto the retina (the back of your eye) for a crisp, clear image. Although the lens inside your eye certainly helps to focus light, the majority of focusing power actually comes from a different part of your eye. The cornea - the clear, protective coating on the surface of your eye - does most of the heavy lifting, making it the main focus of laser vision correction. If your eye has an ideal shape, light will focus precisely where it should on the retina and you will have great vision.

However, if the shape of your eye is even a little off, it can result in light focusing at the wrong spot, leading to distorted eyesight. Conditions treatable by LASIK include Myopia (nearsightedness), Hyperopia (farsightedness), and Astigmatism.

Is laser vision correction for me?

LASIK surgery is the most popular refractive procedure, however there are actaully a number of different surgical treatments designed to minimize your dependence on glasses and contacts. Your Key-Whitman doctor, aided with the latest computerized diagnostic tools, will fully evaluate your individual situation and determine which procedure will lead to your best possible results.

It is important that you make your decision about vision correction surgery, not on your best hopes or what you have heard from a friend, but on facts and with realistic expectations. As with any surgery, there are risks and the possibility of complications. This will be discussed in the office.

Which vision correction procedure is right for you?

The most common type of laser vision correction.

The ideal candidate for LASIK is 18 years of age or over. In addition to having a healthy cornea, patients should not have had a significant change in their prescription in the last 12 months. Conditions treatable by LASIK include:
  • Myopia, or nearsightedness with or without astigmatism
  • Hyperopia, or farsightedness with or without astigmatism
  • Those over or under corrected after other refractive surgery or cataract surgery.

Photorefractive Keratectomy.

If it is recommended that you have PRK due to thin corneas or any other reason, you should know that the process is very similar to LASIK. The only real difference is that rather than having a flap made in your cornea with the WaveLight FS200, your surgeon will gently remove the outer epithelial layer before the laser treatment. Over the next several days, the epithelial layer of your cornea will regenerate. You will be given a prescription for additional drops and medications which are designed to help you heal and remain comfortable.

Visian ICL
 The Clear Alternative to LASIK.

Great news for patients who may have been told that LASIK or PRK were not an option for them. For patients with high amounts of nearsightedness, The Visian ICL, also referred to as the implantable contact lens, is inserted within the eye behind the iris (the colored part of the eye) and just in front of the natural crystalline lens. Best candidates are under 40 years of age.
