What is PRK?

PRK (also called LASEK or Advanced Surface Ablation) is an excellent alternative to LASIK. Without making a flap, the cornea is re-shaped by removing a microscopic layer of tissue. The reshaping allows light rays to bend and focus for improved vision.

The entire procedure takes less than 30 minutes. After you have taken your Valium, numbing drops will be instilled to anesthetize the eye. During the eye surgery procedure, the microscopically thin layer of the cornea is removed. The laser reshapes the underlying corneal tissue by emitting a computer-controlled beam of light that removes the exact amount of tissue in a matter of seconds. Your eye will be shielded with protective goggles overnight. You must have someone drive you home to rest and you will return to our office the next morning

Benefits

The laser used can make a difference in your results. The doctors of the Key-Whitman Eye Center have chosen the Wavelight® Allegretto Wave® Eye-Q flying spot laser from Alcon® because they feel it provides safety and gives superior results. Wavelight with its German engineering is a pioneer in wavefront research. This laser is designed to adapt to the unique curvature of your eye, reshaping it more closely to the curve of an ideal, natural eye. As a result Wavelight® Allegretto Wave® Eye-Q helps preserve the quality of your vision by ensuring your eyes are reshaped to be able to focus more accurately.

The laser uses PerfectPulse Technology® to ensure the stability of the laser beam from the time it is created in the cavity to its exit of the laser onto your eye. It incorporates an active, fast-track eye tracker to confirm centering of the laser treatment in addition to following your eye's normal movements during the treatment. Knowing the laser is following your eye gives a great sense of security during your laser eye treatment.
