What is glaucoma?
Glaucoma is a condition in which the fluid in the eye does not flow normally
resulting in high pressure inside the eye. When pressure rises inside
the eye, optic nerve damage and permanent blindness may result if the
high pressure is not controlled.

Who can be affected with glaucoma?
A family history of glaucoma or having high blood pressure or high blood
sugar may leave you at a higher risk for developing glaucoma and should
be watched very closely with annual exams.

| How is Glaucoma Diagnosed?
At Key-Whitman, simple tests to measure eye pressure and a microscopic
inspection usually alert the doctor of a problem. If glaucoma is
suspected, our glaucoma specialists may use a nerve fiber analyzer
to determine if there is any damage to the optic nerve as well as
a visual field test to measure the amount of peripheral vision loss.
We at the Key-Whitman Eye Center are pleased to offer our patients
the best in diagnostic services. The HRT, or Heidelberg Retina Tomographer
and computerized visual field analyzers are used to monitor the
effects of glaucoma and the benefits of medications used to treat
them.

Treatments Available
With glaucoma, you cannot regain any vision if lost so the proper treatment
is very critical. Drops are used daily to keep the pressure under control
and many new medications are available with little or no side effects.
If these medications do not control the elevated pressure or if the side
effects are severe, our doctors at Key-Whitman Eye Center offer the SLT,
or Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty to open drainage holes in the eye allowing
the fluid to flow more freely to reduce the high pressure and may eliminate
the need for daily eye drops.
