Turning 40 is a milestone birthday for most adults. It’s also the
age when near vision naturally declines and drugstore or prescription
readers become a necessity for many. Enter the new,
FDA-approved Raindrop® Near Vision Inlay.
According to Key-Whitman Eye Center’s
President and Chief Surgeon Jeffrey Whitman, M.D., “One of the biggest complaints I hear from patients over 40 is they
are sick and
tired of wearing readers. Now, with the Raindrop Near Vision Inlay, qualified patients can say
goodbye to readers following a short, 10-minute eye procedure.”
Dr. Whitman has been recognized as one of the top LASIK eye surgeons in
North Texas and the country. He was also heavily involved with the clinical
trials for the Raindrop Near Vision Inlay and performed more Raindrop
procedures during the trial period than any other eye surgeon.
So how does the Raindrop Near Vision Inlay work?
Raindrop procedure to improve reading vision, we use a laser to create a flap to lift the cornea, then implant a clear,
2mm inlay over the pupil area of the non-dominant eye. The procedure steepens
the cornea just enough to provide good near vision with very little compromise
in distance vision,” explains Dr. Whitman.
Patient Kristy Halyburton explains how her personal and professional life
has improved following the Raindrop procedure.
Correct Near and Distance Vision in 10 minutes with Raindrop and LASIK
People who are fed up with needing reading glasses AND wearing glasses
and contacts to correct distance vision may be good candidates to undergo
the Raindrop and LASIK (off label) eye procedures simultaneously.
As Dr. Whitman explains, “While the FDA trials for the Raindrop inlay
were designed and approved to solely treat presbyopia (near vision), we
have had great success performing the Raindrop procedure in combination
with LASIK as an off label treatment.
“The Raindrop procedure is similar to our all laser LASIK procedure,
so we can actually perform LASIK at the same time with the same laser.
Even better, the dual procedure only takes about 10 minutes and is virtually

Are YOU a good candidate for the Raindrop Near Vision Inlay and LASIK?
During the clinical trials for Raindrop, Dr. Whitman and the other surgeons
were able to find out who is and who is not a good candidate for the procedure.
“Most adults over the age of 40 who have healthy eyes are good candidates
for Raindrop, but it isn’t for everybody. During the clinical trials
we found that people with underlying eye problems, like cataracts, or
those who have undergone previous corneal surgery, like LASIK or RK (radio
keratectomy), typically were not good candidates for the procedure.
“However if you are 40 or older and are dependent on reading glasses
for your near vision, Raindrop can be a good choice. Our oldest patient
is 80 years of age and had already had cataract surgery,” says Dr. Whitman.
Over the years, eye surgeons like Dr. Whitman have also been able to determine
which patients are the best candidates for LASIK and which are not. That’s why
LASIK patient satisfaction has jumped from 60 to 96 percent.
According to Dr. Whitman, “The best – and only – way
to find out if you’re a good candidate for either or both procedures
is to schedule a consultation with an eye surgeon experienced in performing
Raindrop and LASIK. Even if you are not a good candidate, Key-Whitman
offers other procedures that may better suit your needs.”
