If You're 40+ and Tired of Wearing Readers, You'll Want to Read This

Until she entered her 40s, Kristy Halyburton always enjoyed excellent vision. Then everything changed. As she explains, “I was fortunate to have 20/20 vision throughout childhood, even into adulthood. So when I started having those 40+ birthdays, I couldn’t see crisply up close anymore, and I became really annoyed every time I had to put reading glasses on.”

Fortunately for Kristy, her reading vision has returned, thanks to an innovative new near vision correction procedure available at Key-Whitman Eye Centers, the Raindrop® Near Vision Inlay.

So what is the Raindrop Near Vision Inlay, and how does it work?

The Raindrop Near Vision Inlay is a tiny, clear, medical device an eye surgeon implants under a LASIK flap. The inlay changes the shape of the cornea to correct near vision in qualified patients. FDA approval was granted June 29, 2016.

Key-Whitman President and Chief Surgeon Jeffrey Whitman, M.D., gives a brief overview of the Raindrop Near Vision Inlay procedure and patient feedback.

Kristy was one of the first patients to undergo this breakthrough procedure to correct reading vision following FDA approval of the inlay. Dr. Jeffrey Whitman performed Kristy’s surgery and also played a key role in the FDA trials.

According to Dr. Whitman, “I was honored that Revision Optics (the manufacturer of the tiny medical device) chose me to take part in the study of the Raindrop Near Vision Inlay, because I have performed so many vision correction surgeries over the years. As it turns out, I ended up performing more Raindrop procedures than any other surgeon during the U.S. clinical trials.”

She can see clearly now – up close, mid-distance and far away

As a memory care nurse, Kristy grew frustrated with her reliance on readers at work and when she would read books and magazines for pleasure. She tried contact lenses, but found them uncomfortable. While she had excellent distance vision already, Kristy’s intermediate vision and reading vision significantly improved following her Raindrop procedure.

Kristy describes how her personal life and professional life have changed following the Raindrop Near Vision Inlay procedure.

“Not having crisp near vision really impacted my performance and efficiency on the job. As a nurse, I’m reading medication labels, doctors’ orders and drawing up syringes of insulin and vaccines, which must be completely accurate. Since my near vision surgery, I don’t have to reach around for my readers, and it has not only made me more efficient at doing my job, it has also made me happier doing my job,” Kristy says.

Kristy was an ideal candidate for the Raindrop procedure. Are you?

According to Dr. Whitman, “Kristy fell perfectly into the criteria that qualifies patients for the corneal inlay procedure. She is over 40, has good distance vision without glasses, plus her eye was healthy and would take well to the LASIK flap. She was also sick of wearing her readers, which is a common complaint we hear from patients over 40.”

Dr. Whitman explains who typically qualifies for the procedure and how to find out if you’re a good candidate for the near vision correction procedure.

While every surgery comes with risk, Dr. Whitman is excited to offer the near vision inlay procedure to patients, because it was proven safe and effective during the FDA trials. The procedure is minimally invasive and the inlay can be removed if the desired results are not achieved.

As he explains, “You can improve near vision during cataract surgery with high-technology lens implants, but that requires removal of the lens in the eye, which is more invasive than the near vision inlay.”
