What Makes a Successful LASIK Candidate?

Posted By Key-Whitman Eye Center || 18-Feb-2014

No doubt you’ve heard of LASIK eye surgery, either in radio or television ads, the Internet or perhaps someone you know has had LASIK. If you are dependent on eyeglasses or contact lenses and are ready to see clearly without them, LASIK might be an option for you.

LASIK eye surgery is the most common laser eye surgery used to correct vision for people with refractive errors such as nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. The procedure can also be used to correct vision following cataract surgery or previous refractive surgery.

Some patients with presbyopia (gradual vision loss with age) may also benefit from monovision vision correction. This procedure corrects vision in one eye for distance and for close up in the other. Because monovision vision correction repairs each eye individually, some patients are not able to tolerate the difference.

While LASIK can help many people, it is not for everyone. If you are considering LASIK eye surgery, here are some of the qualifications for a successful LASIK patient.

The ideal candidate for LASIK is 18 years of age or older, has healthy corneas and has experienced no significant change in their vision prescription in the past 12 months.

People with certain medical conditions may not be good candidates for LASIK. As with any medical procedure or surgery, there are risks and the possibility of complications. Some potential side effects include glare from bright lights, halos, light sensitivity, night-driving flare and visual fluctuation.

Though LASIK surgery is the most popular refractive procedure, there are a variety of surgical treatments designed to minimize your dependence on glasses and contacts. Complimentary consultations are available at Key-Whitman to find out which procedure (if any) will lead to your best possible results. During your consultation, we will discuss your individual risks and potential complications.

It is important that you make your decision about vision correction surgery based on facts and with realistic expectations, rather than on what you hope for or what you have heard from a friend.

If you think LASIK might be an option for you, take our one-minute self-evaluation quiz to help determine if you are a candidate.
