LASIK Eye Surgery and 2013 FSA Changes

photodune-2631624-eye-drops-xsThe Flexible Spending Account (FSA) rules are set to change on January 1, 2013. Beginning next year, employees will be limited to putting just $2,500 pre-tax salary into their health savings account. Currently, there is no legal limit, though most employers set a limit of $5,000.

The start of a new year is just around the corner. Now is the time to consider how you will spend your FSA funds next year, with the new limit set in place. Though $2,500 may not cover the entire LASIK eye surgery cost, it will cover a significant portion.

Key-Whitman offers flexible payment options to complement your FSA funds. We offer payment plans through CareCredit that can help you pay for your vision correction procedure with options for interest free (0%) up to 24 months or in smaller payments in up to 60 months. Schedule your free screening to select the package that best suits your needs.

If you’ve been considering a big-ticket healthcare expense, such as LASIK, using your FSA is one great option for saving money with little or no out-of-pocket expenses. LASIK eye surgery is one of many qualifying FSA expenditures. If you have an FSA, after undergoing surgery, submit your claim through your Flexible Spending Account. Most programs will reimburse you immediately (up to your designated commitment level), giving you up to 12 months to pay (one paycheck at a time) and more time to enjoy your new, clear vision! Check with your employer benefits coordinator for more details and let us confirm your candidacy for the surgery before you designate how much your employer deducts for your pay.

If you have funds remaining in your FSA this year, you have just three months left to use those funds. Keep in mind the “use it or lose it” rules of an FSA. If you’ve been considering LASIK eye surgery, contact Key-Whitman to schedule a free consultation. We can help you decide if a LASIK procedure is the best way to spend your remaining 2012 FSA funds.
