Other than remembering to pack an extra pair of contact lenses, most people don’t give too much thought to how they will care for their eyes while away from home. As you plan your summer vacation, take eye care into account.

Check out these travel tips to care for your eyes:

Caring for contact lenses - Remember to pack your contact lens solution. If you are flying, keep in mind that liquids in carry-on bags must be less than four ounces. Bring enough extra pairs of contact lenses to get you through the duration of your vacation plus one spare just in cause you lose your lenses. Don’t forget to pack your prescription glasses as well.

Protect your eyes from the sun - The sun can be extremely damaging to your eyes. If you wear glasses and will spend a good amount of time outside while on vacation, you may want to consider a pair of prescription sunglasses. When choosing sunglasses, select a pair that block 100 percent of the sun’s UVA and UVB rays.

Prevent dry eyes - Flying on airplanes as well as visiting a dry climate can irritate your eyes. Pack moistening eye drops to prevent dry eyes and irritation. If you have a long flight ahead of you, consider wearing your eyeglasses instead of contact lenses on the plane. This will help keep your eyes rested and prevent them from drying out so you’ll be able to see clearly when your plane lands and your vacation begins!

Protect your eyes while swimming - If you will be swimming on your vacation, do not wear your contact lenses. Wearing contact lenses while swimming increases your risk of contracting an eye infection from bacteria in the water. For the most protection, wear goggles.

Planning ahead for your summer travels can help prevent any inconvenience, even when it comes to your eyes. Before you head out the door, do a quick double check to ensure you have everything necessary to care for your eyes while you are away. If you want to prevent the hassle of contact lenses or prescription eyeglasses, contact Key-Whitman and set up a consultation for LASIK vision correction surgery.
