On Thursday, January 26, 2012 we kicked off our first weekly Live Facebook Chat from 11:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. During the Chat, Key-Whitman Eye Center’s Chief Surgeon, Dr. Whitman, discussed LASIK eye surgery and answered our fan’s questions in real time. If you couldn’t make the chat, but are interested in learning more about LASIK eye surgery check out the fan’s questions and Dr. Whitman’s responses below.

Is there a "sensitive" time after LASIK that the incision may be reopened?

If referring to the amount of time after the original LASIK surgery that the flap can be re-lifted for an enhancement procedure, this can be done many years afterward; particularly, if the flap is made with a laser.

What is the best type of surgery for nearsighted patients? What about payment plans?

LASIK is the best treatment for nearsightedness. Please visit our website to inquire about payment plans with up to 24 months interest free. Also, if you are too nearsighted for LASIK, we offer the ICL procedure(Implantable Contact Lens).

If I have chronic dry eye, can I still have LASIK?

Yes, but the problem has to be treated first. There are numerous treatments available, and the doctors at Key-Whitman specialize in the treatment of dry eye.

Are both eyes usually done simultaneously?

During LASIK, eyes are usually done one right after the other.

Is vision corrected forever or is it something that will need to be performed again later in life?

LASIK treatment should last until you start developing hardening of the lens or cataract when you get older. We have many good treatments when that occurs such as Crystalens™.

Do most insurance companies pay for most of the cost for the surgery?

Insurance companies do not cover LASIK, but check with us because your vision plan may offer a discount. If you have an FSA, or flex spending account, that money may go toward your LASIK procedure, as well.

Is there a recovery period following the procedure?

Generally the vision is very good the next day, but may take several weeks to completely stabilize.

What is the pain factor of this procedure?

Generally there is no pain with the procedure other than some pressure like feeling that lasts a few seconds.

My fiancé is interested in LASIK but is afraid he'll have to take a week off of work after the surgery. Typically how long will it take to go back to daily routines?

Most surgeries are performed on Friday and the patient is able to return to work on Monday! The procedure itself only takes about 15-20 minutes for both eyes.

What are options for people who don't want to use readers?

For patients over 40 years old, our best procedure now is Crystalens™, a lens implant to correct both near and far vision.

How often have you had complications when performing LASIK on a patient?

Since a laser is used to both make the flap and perform the vision correction, complications are very, very rare.

How much does LASIK cost if you have astigmatism in both eyes?

There is no additional cost for astigmatism correction.

What is the best surgery if I am 55 years old?

For patients around your age lens replacement surgery such as Crystalens™ is recommended since this addresses both distance and vision issues.

Can this procedure be done while pregnant? I've always heard that your eyes can change a lot during pregnancy.

We do not recommend doing LASIK while a patient is pregnant or nursing. We usually have the patient wait 90 days after they deliver or have finished nursing prior to performing the procedure to account for any vision changes.

Do you give special discounts for students or recent graduates?

We have attractive financing plans available to all our patients.

What about night vision or being able to see better at night?

Many people see better at night once they have their vision fully corrected.

How soon after treatment can a patient exercise?

Patients may return to their normal exercise routines within 48 hours of the surgery. The only exception to this is that swimming is not recommended for up to two weeks after the procedure.

My eyes have been really dry lately and I am not sure why. Should this be something I should have checked out? I usually wear contacts but in these past couple weeks have had to wear my glasses every day.

Key-Whitman specializes in the treatment of dry eyes, and it is recommended to have your eyes checked out when you experience changes in your eyes or vision.
