what foods are good for your eyes2Everyone knows that eating carrots is good for eye health, but besides carrots, have you ever wondered what foods are good for your eyes? Some foods, like carrots, are obvious, but there are a few others that might surprise you.

Good eye health is dependent on eating a diet that is rich in fruits and vegetables. Getting the recommended three to five servings of fruits and vegetables daily promotes good eye health as well as good overall health. Some of the top picks for eye care include carrots, avocados, broccoli, spinach, cabbage, and tomatoes. Carrots contain beta carotene, which your body converts into vitamin A, which promotes good eye sight. Avocados are a nutrient-dense food that is packed full of vitamins that are excellent for eye care, including vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin B6 and vitamin E. Avocados are also rich in lutein, which is important for preventing macular degeneration and cataracts. Broccoli also contains lutein, as well as calcium and vitamin C. Spinach is another great source of vitamin A, and lutein. Tomatoes are known to be great for skin health, but they also benefit eye health because they are rich in vitamin C and lycopene.

Along with fruits and vegetables that promote healthy eyes, there are also sources of protein that are great for eye health. Eggs contain vitamin A, zinc, lutein, lecithin, vitamin B12, and vitamin D, all of which are great for your eyes. The omega-3 fatty acids that are found in salmon, along with folic acid, vitamin D, vitamin B6, vitamin B12, and vitamin A make this an excellent protein choice. Sunflower seeds offer a source of plant protein that also contains selenium, which can prevent cataracts and contributes to overall eye health.

Eating a well-balanced diet that includes these foods on a regular basis can help you stay healthy overall, and can also help you keep your eyes in great condition for years to come.
